SEVEN CHICKS ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON

We’re seven savvy chicks, soon to be eight.
We write on one Sunday each month
Over pie, peanuts, even haggis,
To prompts while we sip tea and munch.

Whether foul of mood or weather, we meet,
Pens firing reflections onto the sheet,
Heart-wrenching, gut-churning, ofttimes offbeat.
It’s always a welcome retreat.

Take this, for example. Continue reading

THANKS FOR THE MEMORY

Same place, different holiday, but you get the idea. ca. 1972

Same place, different holiday, but you get the idea. ca. 1972

Once upon a Thanksgiving Day, the only room large enough to host the Lambo family was in my grand-parents basement that had been fitted with a second kitchen just for such occasions. The oblong, wood-panelled room sported a bar at the far end fashioned from the same panelling that covered the cinder-block walls. Its red speckled linoleum top ran just about the width of the room under a casement window that looked onto the shrub lined cement driveway.

A few cousins, my younger sister, and I often played behind the bar, rummaging through an assorted collection of treasures—pirate ship embossed coasters, gold-rimmed wine glasses, wrinkled sepia photos of the old country, and glass cocktail stirrers topped with fruits, animals, and, close your eyes now, slim naked women. HERE A MO, THERE A MO, EVERYWHERE A MO-MO

I know what you’re thinking – “It’s mooooo. Everywhere a moo-moo.” Nope. This has nothing to do with Old McDonald Had A Farm. It’s about challenges, travels, and imagination. Continue reading

IT’S NOT YOUR MAMMA’S HALLOWEEN RECIPE

halloween cookies

‘Twas All Hallows Eve, the one-hundredth in a row,
When Headwitch prepared her special cookie dough.
Kids craved the old crone’s gooey, ghoulish treats—
Goodies that’d send them howling down streets.
‘Cause what would the spookiest day of the year
Be without tricks and a small dose of fear?

SONG OF MY SELF ~ An Introspection

photo (21)

While filing snippets of writing exercises, prompts, and ideas jotted on napkins in dark restaurants, I came across a poem I wrote using the first line in Walt Whitman’s 1892 poem “Song of Myself” as a starting point…

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself.”
For the authentic person I am becoming ~
No more hiding behind my other selves ~
the good, polite, quiet little girl
who always does what she is told.
No more conforming to that which is expected.

GONE FISHING

With my motivation batteries out of juice and my head entrenched in a word cloud crammed full of ideas, yet unable to reel in the one which will inspire this post, I’ve decided to go fishing. Not your typical jump in your boat, push off, and row out to the middle of the lake kind of fishing. That’s too cumbersome. It would involve changing out of my pyjamas, slathering on sun-screen, and inflicting pain on earthworms. Continue reading

BEING THE CHANGE

donna glacier 2 soapboxSteady now – okay, I’ve got it. Sometimes one soap box isn’t enough. Sometimes, when there’s so much going on, you’ve got to step it up a notch and kill two birds with one stone no, uh, maybeeee, bake two cakes in one oven? Nope. Wait! I’ve got it – Fix two owies with one hug! Or in this case, three.

Friends, Family, BlogMates – lend me your ears.

It’s a busy weekend coming up. Continue reading

THE STATE OF OUR UNION, A DRESS

PicMonkey CollageWho said time travel is impossible? James T. Kirk managed to do it in five episodes of STAR TREK. Marty McFly took us BACK TO THE FUTURE more than once. H. G. Well’s did it in print and Metro Goldwyn Mayer put it on film in THE TIME MACHINE. As I promised when she became engaged, now that my daughter has bought her wedding dress, I invite you to follow me into the past to the day I bought mine. *Drum roll please* Nope. Not working. The theme from Twilight Zone is still the best…

Don’t be alarmed. It’s not uncommon for the page to ripple and fade before we dive in. I do suggest you pop a motion sickness tablet however, especially if you’ve never had any experience with inter-dimensional travel. Ready? Set? JUMP! Continue reading

SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW…

rainbow2That’s where you’d have found us on a recent midsummer’s Sunday.
Although, since the pre-requisite tornado was off wreaking havoc somewhere else in the world, my sister, niece, a friend and I had to find another magical form of transportation to take us there. Fortunately, ‘the Bean’ was just sitting in the driveway twiddling its tires so we jumped in and hit the street – following the black asphalt road up, over, and back down Divisidero like a scene from  “Bullitt” until we arrived at the place we’d heard of once in a tourist’s brochure – a true pot of gold – the Continue reading
