SONG OF MY SELF ~ An Introspection

photo (21)

While filing snippets of writing exercises, prompts, and ideas jotted on napkins in dark restaurants, I came across a poem I wrote using the first line in Walt Whitman’s 1892 poem “Song of Myself” as a starting point…

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself.”
For the authentic person I am becoming ~
No more hiding behind my other selves ~
the good, polite, quiet little girl
who always does what she is told.
No more conforming to that which is expected.

“I celebrate myself, and sing myself.”
A being with no beginning and no end ~
even when that thought scares the bejesus out of me.
Everyday I learn a bit more ~ I see, I feel, I know who I really am ~
A being with endless possibilities!
I am the Creator of my own happiness ~
it is my responsibility to my self and no other.
I am no longer standing in my own way…
I enjoy my SELF!

Now, I challenge you to do the same and share in ‘comments’, if you so choose.

With this “elephant” of life, we blind ones grasp at its body parts and together learn reality. From my grasp, I have great joy in my “belonging” to my “family”, being like one of the 5 “Chinese brothers” with a uniqueness to share. I believed I “began” in 1955, though I share the never ending. I too won’t look forward to passing on. If I go first, I’ll leave a light on for you. We also share our firm and mutual understanding that there is no one like Donna, and there is no one like Mike. Thanks for sharing!

My song has been silent since I was a child, but I’m learning to hum to myself. One day the hum will move from my head to my heart. In the meanwhile, I’ll harmonise with you 😉
