WHEN I CAN’T FIND THE HUMOR – A Coping Poem

When I can’t find the humor
I put the news on hold – I
Stop scrolling,
watching
reading
the stream of mind-blowing events
that befuddle my brain
wet my cheeks
wrench my heart

When I can’t find the humor
I shift my gaze outside my window
drink in the beauty
too often ignored
taken for granted
owing to the senseless acts of violence
the world over

When I can’t find the humor
I am grateful I have a window at all
walls to hold them in place
keep in the heat
ward off the wet
I am grateful,
not to be trite,
but to be reminded
of the plight
our neighbors must bear
be they human, plant, or animal

When I can’t find the humor
I write
a poor, sucky poem like this
hoping to find the humor that is out there
somewhere

I know it exists
that beautiful,
kind
humor-filled
world

I just need to step back,
breathe,
take the advice of friends,
look inside myself                                                                                                                                                                               as well as outside                                                                                                                                                                        to see it

Be Well Dear Reader

  3. Lovely words and very hopeful. It’s hard to believe there’s a kind world out there at the moment.

I can only bear to digest the news as topical comedy, but even that is struggling to find the humour in these dark times!

    Thank you for sharing.
