FROM MRS. HUMBUG TO YOU – A (sort of) Holiday Greeting

“‘Tis one week ’til Christmas,” resounds through the house.
“And nothing’s been hung on the tree,” groans my spouse.

Up go his arms in a frenzy, a near panic.
“‘Twas weeks ago I dragged the box down from the attic!

“No Santas, no manger, no cookies, no lights?
What’cha been doin’  all those days and most nights?

“No halls have been decked, no doors wreathed, or bespangled,
There’s mistletoe in heaps, and the garland’s all tangled.

“The stockings are strewn across sofas and chairs
Where’s your holiday spirit? Do you not care?
The kids, with their other halves, arrive in just days,
Yet you still sit here calmly, and apparently, unfazed.

“What happened to the woman who wrote year-end newsletters,
Always sharing the family’s antics and parades in Christmas sweaters?
Snap out of it, Mrs. Humbug!” His eyes twinkle with delight,
knowing with this Dickens reference my holiday spirit will ignite.

I’ve been known to be a bit Grinch-y, I’ll admit it to you,
But compare me to Scrooge? No. That simply won’t do.
So I spring to my feet and scurry about
Stringing lights, arranging Santas – look here – check it out:

Afterwards, I attempt to write that newsletter,
But I’ve run out of time to make it sing any better.
And so with no forced rhyme, and one simple reason,
I wish you a safe
and Happy Holiday Season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and a Joyous Kwanzaa
from me and my family
to you and yours.
