MOLECULARLY SPEAKING…

…we are all that is, was, and ever shall be

gas, liquid, solid
bustling atoms bond,
breeding beings of
breath, blood, bone

a convergence of matter = a mass

of varied shapes, colors, sizes
furred, feathered, scaled,
petaled, prickly,
slick

we inhale
O2, CO2, H2O depending on our species

we exhale
vapour-trails stream from every bark, roar, tweet, yawn
cry, kiss, whisper, sigh
condensation couches in coughs, snuggles in sneezes, puddles in piddle
microscopic molecules are scooped up
carried off by the four winds
over and over again
since the beginning of whichever origin story we’ve woven into our fabric
of being

every moist molecule bundled in breath
swaddled in sweat
locked in a lone tear
has been held captive in our atmosphere for eons
or more

it snakes down rivers
crashes upon rocky shores
it freezes, melts, spills down hills
only to rise again as veils of mist from lush valleys, lochs, and moors

hurricane, sun-shower, snowflake, raindrop,
dish-water, hail-pellet, slimy mud slop

this life-sustaining element
has cycled through the ages
rolling over lips of prophets, healers, common folk, and sages

it has tended the lotus flower
 rushed from fingers spread wide
sprung from scorched desert sands
transformed into wine

Inhale

We are owl, buffalo, rat, mosquito, whale
daffodil, dinosaur, potato, kale

Exhale

We are iron, rust, sulphur, silver, gold
root, thorn, rose, poison ivy, elm

Inhale

We are Abraham, Galileo, Napoleon, Mozart
Frida Kahlo, Chief Seattle, Attila, Joan of Arc
Ghandi, Mandela, Lao Tzu, MLK
Confucius, Lincoln, Morgan le Fay

Exhale

do We not hail from the same beginning?
do We not drink from the same well?
do We not die, decay, and transform
into a haze of dust and cloud of cells?

I am you. You are me.
We are all that is, was, and ever shall be…

…molecularly speaking, at least
don’t you agree?
