ODE TO RESILIENCE

img_3523Words fail
to make the leap from grey matter
to tapping finger tips on keys

they say
“It’s because of Mercury”
they say
“the planet is retrograde”
they say
“that makes it a poor time for all forms of communication”

WHEW
thank the planetary gods
it’s NOT my muse gone mute

Their list is long ~
a lengthy scroll of do nots that would stretch to the height
of a stand
of resilient
six-hundred-year-old redwoods
should it be dropped from their crowns
commencing with
“do not make verbal agreements or
“begin a new job
“do not start a project,
“sign a contract,
“not yet,
“do not buy, do not lease, do not hire a new vet*(rinarian)”

(I’d add a footnote here*
DO NOT make sad attempts at rhyming…not ever
unless…
of course,
Mercury is, indeed, retrograde
They might forgive you then,
for your reprehensible attempt at writing poetry,
IF
They know
that when this planet goes retro
it is a time
to
reevaluate
reboot
revise
reconnect
review
reinvent
reprise
and reflect
re___
re___
re___
[you can fill in the blank].
But, alas, more than likely
they’ll claim
this ode
“simply stank”).

And that, dear Reader, is my poem to resilience re-silly-ence. It may not adhere to the definition of an ode, but hey, Mercury is retrograde, after all. Let’s just leave it at that and reconvene next week when the planet goes direct and sanity returns…at least until the 20th of January, anyway 😦

Is it only me, or have you felt the effects of this phenomenon since mid-December, too?

On wing-ed tootsies, did your Ode fly to my box of in.
I am no bard – to claim that epithet would be a sin.
But I know what I like, and whether serious or in jest,
any poetic offering that makes me smile I love the best.

There’s a phenomenon I missed? Anyway, your poem is an exemplar of re-silly-ence and your bouncy approach to the muse most amusing!

Dear Donna, I love your Ode. And I have a running joke with a friend about Mercury Retrograde, so I had to laugh a lot. Thank you!
