‘Twas three nights before Christmas, the fifth of Hanukkah,
four from Galungan, and still five ’til Kwanzaa.
‘Twas two months since Muharram and India’s festival of light,
when sun snuggled down into earth’s longest night.
A gentle breeze kissed the mountain, nudging daytime to eve,
as an unkindness of ravens and one hawk took their leave.
Observing them soar back to where they’d come from
I suddenly noticed how still it’d become.
Gone were the sounds from the roadways below.
‘Twas as if all’d been swaddled in a blanket of snow.
Not a bark or peal of laughter arose from the quay.
Not one crack of a gun from warring worlds far away.
Hungry bellies stopped rumbling, as did wails of misery.
‘Twas the start of winter solstice, and ’twas somewhat eerie.
I pulled the silence close. Hugged it. Wrapped it tight.
I savored its benevolence while stars winked their long extinct light.
With each passing moment, serenity settled into my being.
‘Twas a calm I’d never, ever felt – except once, when I was dreaming…
‘Twas of a world where peace and compassion ruled,
one where each and every child is schooled.
‘Twas a world where hunger is a defunct word,
where generosity, not greediness, is the choice preferred.
‘Twas a world that is possible to create this very day
if we use our knowledge wisely and, as the old ones say,
“Tread lightly upon the earth. Walk in a good way.”
And so my Dear Friends,
MANY THANKS
for joining me on my blogging journey.
I hope your Christmas was MERRY
And your Hanukkah, HAPPY.
May your Kwanzaa be JOYFUL
And your Galungan, RADIANT.
I’m sure your Diwali was ENLIGHTENING
And your Muharram, PEACEFUL.
May 2015 be filled with love and peace, health and prosperity,
and success in all our undertakings.
Let the Celebration begin!
Saturnalia was fine this year and so was Festivus. I danced around the pole in my toga. Have a great 2015.
