Please, bare with me. No – keep your clothes on. I mean, bear with me – although, that doesn’t look quite right either, does it? What would a gargantuan, blood-n-honey-sucking, fur-ball with razor-edged teeth have to do with anything in this context? Just sayin’…
Anyway, as I was saying, in my last post I forgot to mention an especially favourite hero of mine. Not the melted cheese covered meatball, veal, or chicken parmigiana sandwich kind of hero, although both do have an Italian connection – the one, with food – and the other, with Gioachino Rossini’s William Tell Overture – or the horsey song, as my kids used to call it. Shoot! That probably gave it away.

It’s no surprise to anyone who knew me growing up that The Lone Ranger and Tonto topped the list of my all time favorite human heroes in the whole wide world. However, only my mother and the Great-Horse-Lover-In-The-Sky are wise to the fact that Silver had galloped his way into the number one spot of animal favorites during bedtime prayers. The count down went something like this: “…God bless Mommy and Daddy, Omi and Opa, Al and Grace, the man at the ACME store, my friends Vinny and Arthur, Mrs. Whats-her-name across the street, the Lone Ranger and Tonto, and Lassie and, and, and don’t forget, especially Silver. Amen.”

If ever there was a horse that could relegate Mr. Ed, the talking Palomino, to second place for my horsely affections, it was Silver. Yes, that clever, bee-u-tiiiii-ful stark white stallion, had attitude AND a sense of humor. Something about the way he reared up into the air just before dashing off after the bad guys left all my other four-legged heroes in the dust made me want to have him as a pet. The phrase “Hi-Yo Silver! Away!” is so much more exciting than “Happy Trails to you!” Nope, Roy Roger’s Trigger didn’t stand an iceberg’s chance in today’s arctic of making it into the top five.
If Silver had had competition though, it would only have been with Lassie, in part because a dog was easier to keep in a second floor three-room apartment. And besides, who wouldn’t want to own a dog that constantly saved someones life? I could have fed her my vegetables under the table too. Then I wouldn’t have gotten into so much trouble for burying my cauliflower in the front yard.

Rin Tin Tin, Corky and White Shadow, Spin and Marty, Fury and Circus Boy. LOL basically anything that had dogs and horses, or smart kids or a combination of any of them 😀

Oh, forgot about Rin-Tin-Tin…good one Lyn. I guess Corky and White Cloud were from ‘down under’. I’ll need to look them up. But if you liked them, I’m sure I would have too. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Donna,
I liked the dog Goliath from the Davey and Goliath show. It was an animated show on Sunday mornings that always had a story with a lesson for young children. I can still hear Goliath say,” Oh Daveee.” Thanks for bringing back a good childhood memory.

Being that I’m not much of an animal person, I’ve been racking my brain to think of an animal show that I liked. I watched Roy Rogers and Dale Evans and laughed at Mr. Ed, but they weren’t exactly favorites. Then I remembered the show I always looked forward to….”Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp!” Remember him and his partner Mata Hairy?

Vic, I’m so sorry–I didn’t read your comment carefully, and wasn’t trying to diss your show. I’m not even familiar with it, and I was referring more to Donna’s comment about dressed-up chimps.
